Hand Dryers

In early 1994 a study was initiated by the Facilities Management Recycling Committee to compare hand dryers to paper towels. SFPIRG engaged the services of an SFU student to prepare the report. The two hand-drying mechanisms were compared for cost, ease-of-use, efficiency, safety and overall environmental impact. The intention of the study was to analyze the feasibility of replacing paper towels with electric hand dryers, thus reducing the paper waste generated in the washrooms. The resulting data showed that hand dryers were the more economical alternative, as they would eliminate the use, and hence the disposal, of approximately 43,000 rolls of paper towels annually. While the dry towels weigh almost 14 tonnes, they are considerably heavier when wet, making up approximately 13 percent of the overall waste stream (over 100 tonnes in 1996/97, including water) - a significant and unnecessary component of the University's solid waste stream. The Facilities Management Planning and Design Division decided that all new buildings would be equipped with hand dryers. The opening of the West Mall complex marked the first new building equipped with hand dryers in all washrooms. In April 1996 the new Maggie Benston Student Centre opened, fully equipped with hand dryers and electric faucets. Washrooms in the Academic Quadrangle and the WAC Bennett Library are gradually being retrofitted for hand dryers.
